If the battery goes bad it would not cause the computer to freeze. What will happen is that everytime you unplug or the computer looses power, you will get a screen at startup saying CMOS checksum error and asking you "Press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup", at wich time you will have to enter setup and reset the time and boot order (if not set to default).
